The Celebrating STs:
We are also known as Adivasis which mean the 'original or ancient inhabitants'. Although terms such as Atavika (in Sanskrit) for forest dwellers, Vanvasi or Girijan (hill people) are also used for the tribes of India, Adivasi carries the specific meaning of being the original and native inhabitants of a given region. Our community comprises about 645 tribal communities. We are present in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Mizoram and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
